Health Benefits

Macadamias are one of those few wonderful foods that are not only delicious, but have real health benefits. Like all natural unprocessed foods they contain a large number of trace elements and minerals which are vital to good health. They contain small amounts of protein, carbohydrate and fibre, and a large amount of fat as oil (>70%).

It is the TYPE of oil that makes them stand out from other nuts. More than 80% of it is monounsaturated (“good” oil). In his recent book “Toxic Oil” (Penguin Group 2013) health crusader David Gillespie indicates that of all nut spreads “Obviously the best choice is macadamia nut spread; it has almost no polyunsaturated fats and no more sugar than whole macadamia nuts.” He does admit that it is the most expensive.

The study of the health benefits of macadamia oil is very complex, but the high levels of monounsaturated fat and the very favorable ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 fatty acids appears to improve the body’s metabolism in general and decrease the inflammation which is to blame for many of the diseases of aging. A study in Australia showed that addition of a small number of macadamia nuts to the daily diet lowered blood cholesterol levels.

As macadamias and macadamia butter contain very little carbohydrate and are only very slowly digested due to their oil content, they can be a helpful addition to a slimming or diabetic diet by preventing fluctuations in blood sugar levels, ( when consumed in moderation of course! ).

We know many people are concerned about chemicals contaminating their food. Our orchard is spray free, with no herbicides or insecticides applied to our trees or nuts.

We believe that our fresh New Zealand grown macadamia nuts are as good as these nuts can be, due to their careful handling and ideal growing conditions.
